Frequently Asked Questions

Our wild venison is sourced through the careful and responsible management of wild deer across the South West. With deer populations in the UK at a record high, numbers would continue to rise without intervention, causing serious damage to our beautiful countryside.

We harvest all of our venison with the utmost respect, from both parkland and wild landscapes, producing fully traceable and sustainable wild venison of the finest quality, expertly managed by us from the field to your fork.

Wild venison is arguably the best example of a truly sustainable and ethically sourced red meat.

Our wild venison is available to purchase all year round. However, the main season for managing our wild deer runs from 1st August through to the end of April.

At Curtis Pitts Deer Services, our mission is to provide traceable, sustainable wild venison and game that you can enjoy with complete confidence, knowing we stand behind every step of our process to ensure exceptional quality.

Because we harvest a truly wild, seasonal product, all our venison and game is sent to customers frozen. We vacuum pack and blast freeze each cut within hours of butchery, capturing it at its absolute best. This rapid freezing locks in the natural, wild flavour and goodness, preserves the tender texture and keeps it just as fresh as the moment it left the field - all without any additives or preservatives.

Freezing also guarantees that your order arrives in perfect condition, giving you plenty of time to enjoy it at your convenience.

We strongly believe that freezing is one of the purest and healthiest ways to store food, and it allows us to bring you the finest wild venison all year round.

Because our venison and game is harvested, processed and packaged with meticulous care on a small scale, the risks associated with harmful bacteria are greatly reduced - ensuring it can be safely refrozen. This rigorous quality control and our freezing technique distinguishes us from larger supermarket supply chains.

If your order arrives frozen or has thawed slightly during transit, it is therefore perfectly safe to return it to your freezer. While this isn’t advisable with supermarket meat, it’s just one of the many benefits of choosing Curtis Pitts Deer Services — quality you can trust, every step of the way.

Our insulated packaging is designed to maintain safe chilled temperatures for up to 48 hours in transit. Although some thawing may occur, your produce remains safe to consume or refreeze, provided it is still cold to the touch (below 8°C) when it arrives.

Our wild deer are harvested for conservation purposes and always with the utmost respect. Once one of our expert stalkers has carefully selected an animal to be culled, it is cleanly and humanely shot in the wild, ensuring an ethical and stress-free death.

We follow a rigorous process after harvesting every carcass in the wild - without exception. We believe this dedication to ethical practice and quality sets our venison apart. The resulting meat is unmatched in quality and its provenance story is highly sought-after in the finest professional kitchens.

Our venison carcasses are hung in the fur in our bespoke chiller for up to two weeks before skinning. This allows the meat to become tender and enhances its rich, natural flavour - without becoming overly gamey.

We can also age whole carcasses or prime cuts to individual chefs’ specifications, ensuring the perfect balance of taste and texture.

Thanks to the exceptional care and expertise of our team throughout harvesting and processing, you’ll always enjoy venison of the highest quality, flavour, and tenderness.

Wild venison is a naturally lean and nutrient-dense meat, making it an excellent choice for a healthy diet. It’s higher in protein than most farmed meats, yet lower in cholesterol and fat - so you get more of the essential building blocks for muscle, tissue repair and overall vitality without the excess saturated fat.

Venison is packed with important micronutrients, including iron and B vitamins like B12, which support energy production and a healthy nervous system. It’s also rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a naturally occurring fat thought to contribute to heart health.

Because it comes from wild, free-ranging deer harvested to help maintain balanced ecosystems and protect the countryside, it's also a sustainable and ethical choice. Choosing wild venison means you’re not only nourishing your body but also supporting responsible land management and environmental conservation.

Our deer roam freely through wild landscapes, selecting their diet from a rich variety of seasonal forage. From lush grasses and herbs to berries, buds and the tender shoots found in hedgerows, they cherry-pick the very best nature has to offer.

This varied, natural diet creates a depth of flavour and quality that simply can’t be replicated in farmed meat, giving wild venison its distinctive taste and making it stand apart from other red meats.

All of our produce is vacuum packed in a protective outer wrap to lock in freshness and flavour. This packaging ensures your meat arrives in perfect condition and can be stored safely in the fridge or freezer.

Our products will keep for at least 6 months when frozen. Each pack is clearly labelled with the product name, best-before date and any ingredients, so you always know exactly what’s inside.

At Curtis Pitts Deer Services, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do – from ethical deer management to how our venison is delivered to your door.

That’s why we’re proud to have updated our packaging to be as environmentally friendly as possible using 100% natural British sheep’s wool.

Biodegradable, compostable and perfect for repurposing around the home and garden, our wool packaging provides high-performance insulation, keeping your order cool for up to 72 hours. Paired with a strong, recyclable cardboard outer, this eco-friendly solution helps us minimise waste and move towards a more sustainable future.

Once you’ve unpacked your order, you can reuse, recycle or compost the wool liner. It can be repurposed for pet bedding or home insulation, or simply added to your compost heap where it will naturally break down in to the soil. The plastic sleeve is fully recyclable within your household recycling, along with the cardboard outer.
